Parcel 17
This two and a half story Federal House with a greek revival entry portico was built circa 1830. The portico is original except for the 2 front pillars. The entablature of the entry portico is composed of an architrave having a band of vertical reeding, a frieze embellished with a course or band of guttae, and a cornice with mutule blocks. Mutule Blocks are found also under the roof cornice. In 1950-55 the house was shingled over clapboards and the white trim was painted brown. Original shutters were removed in 1984. There are 12 over 12 pane windows on both floors and a three section Palladian window in the west peak of the attic. Windows are capped with drip moldings. The large floor length window north of the front door was at one time a door. The rear door appears to be original. The rear outside stairs were added circa 1970. The weel [i.e., wheel?] curb and picket fence surrounding a herb garden were erected circa 1980. The outbuilding close to the rear of the house was used as a carriage shed, a tool house, and a garage. The building at the rear of the property was a garage and was moved from Parcel 15 c. (Another small building was erected in the
rear circa 1970.) Landscaping similar [to that of] the 1800's was initiated by the Garden Club of Orange. (See next page for further information.)
