Parcel 20
605 Orange Center Road

In 1961 the red brick, white trimmed Orange Public Library was opened on land formerly belonging to the Clark Family and used for farming for many years. The Lions Club of Orange raised funds for the land purchase, and a fund drive helped to defray costs of the building. The facade features bay windows and dormer windows. The second floor is used for working area.

A bequest from Marian Merwin Halliday provided funds for a large addition to the building which was erected in 1973. It provided space for reading rooms, a children's area, more than 10,000 volumes in stacks reached by an inner ramp, plus collections of tapes, prints and records. An outside ramp also was constructed to provide access for the handicapped.

The library began its existence as a volunteer project and had been located in a shop-front in the Firelite Shopping Center on Old Tavern Road. In 1974 the library became a department of the town.
