In 1908 Charles S. Johnson, a local carpenter, built this two and a half story spacious house for his own use. It remains largely unchanged, with a full front porch, and two dormer windows in the generous attic. This turn of the century home has a traditional center hall with parquet oak floors on the first floor, and chestnut woodwork and staircase. A separate two-car garage was built at the rear in 1920. A rear addition and deck was added in the early 1980's.
Of interest is the following account that was researched by Eleanor Pfeiffer. Erastus Scranton, according to his own account, bought the original meeting house (page 25 of his "A Statistical Account of the Township of Milford -March 10th, 1835": - "The present meeting house in this Society (North Milford) was raised June 27, 1810 and finished at the expiration of 9 months. It was dedicated to the Lord, April 17th, 1811. After the building was completed the old one was sold to us for $101. at vendue. (Auction) ("Who is us?")
Mary Woodruff's book states "and he (Erastus Scranton) had it moved across the street from its original location (on Green - see Parcel #5 deed) to a place between the present Town Hall (Academy) and the home of Benjamin T. Clark and converted it into a dwelling. It was later destroyed by fire." ?M. Woodruff and Mr. Smith do not agree. Mr. Smith says old meetinghouse moved to plot south of Ben Clark.
