Many histories, manuscripts, and old family documents have been consulted, a list of which appears in the back of the book. As far as possible, proof of the accuracy of the statements herein made has been confirmed.
John Lowell once said, "Even though virtue and not descent is important, it is surely a strong motive to good conduct that your predecessors have done worthy service to the state." So this brief history is humbly submitted, hoping that it may arouse some sentiment of pride and the debt of gratitude we owe to the sober, industrious trailblazers of yesteryear.
