BETHANY COMMUNITY SCHOOL
The Christmas Program at the Bethany Community School which, in previous years was held on the night of the December Parent Teacher Meeting, has been ommitted this year. The great incrase in enrollment has made this change necessary. The present school facilities will not accommodate all the children and their parents. The children are planning parties in the individual rooms on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 21st. The P.T.A. is planning to furnish refreshments. Each room is having a Christmas program and an entire school assembly will be held on Friday morning, Dec. 22.
The boys of the seventh and eighth grades, with the assistance of Mr. MacDonald, school custodian, have constructed a projection table for the new 16 millimeter projector purchased by the school. The table is so arranged that projection in any classroom is simple and effective.
Recent discussions in the upper grade Human Relations classes at the school have centered around the language problems of foreigners in a strange land. To add to these discussions, On December 12th, Mrs. Hanry Bunting arranged for Dr. Ralph Lewin, a colleague in the Botany Department of Yale University, to speak to the children of the four upper grades on ESPERANTO -- A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. Dr. Lewin learned Esperanto as a child in England, and was made increadingly aware of the advantages of a universal language this past summer while traveling in Sweden and France. Dr. Lewin gave an extremely interesting talk and illustrated his remarks by language comparisons on the blackboard. The children responded with many eager questions and the community school is very grateful to Mrs. Bunting for making it possible for the children to hear Dr. Lewin.
Mr. James Warburton, Principal of the Bethany School, asks that all children use only their assigned buses because of crowded conditinos. In case of an emergency, some arrangement for transportation can be made through Mr. Warburton.
The Bethany Community School will close at 1:00 P.M. on Dec. 22nd.
Janet Shelton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Shelton, formerly of Amity Rd., Bethany, now of Cleveland, Ohio, was married recently to Mr. Robert Carrigan, a graduate of the Colgate-Rochester Theological School where he is teaching and taking graduate work.
At a recent P.T.A. meeting Mrs. Sidney Svirsky distributed Civil Defense cards and urged those qualified to sign up for courses of instruction in First Aid and Home Nursing, and asked that anyone knowing of available space for these classes call 3-0329.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Eisenmann have purchased Cranberry Hollow Farm on Carrington Rd., Bethany and are in residence. Mr. Eisenmann is the new Typosgrapher at Yale University, succeeding Carl Rollins.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Douglas Allan of Bethany Wood have bought a nine-acre tract from J.C. Howell.
Mrs. Irging A. Tuthill of Warner, New Hampshire, will spend the winter with the Raymond Blacks of Fairwood Road. Mrs. Tuthill is the mother of Mrs. Black.
The Bethany Grange is in great need of a piano. If anyone has a used piano and would be willing to donate it, it would be greatly appreciated.
