Bethany Quintet Defeats Bethesda
On Saturday evening the Bethany Basketball Team, playing at the New Haven YMCA before an enthusiastic crowd of hometown supporters, beat the Bethesda Lutheran Church by a score of 28 to 17, to remain the only undefeated team in their division in the league. This victory insures the Bethany boys of a chance in the playoffs. High scorer for the evening was Simpson with 12 point. Other tallies were: MacDonald, 6; Johnson, 5; Winter, 3; and Giblin, 2. Next Saturday the team plays the Montowese Baptist aggregation at the YMCA.
Bethany Bowlers Advance in League
The Broadway Bowling Alleys saw another spirited evening of contests last Wednesday when the Beckers took the measure of the Drillers, 2 to 1, to hold their first-place grip on league honors. The Garage, in defeating the Firemen 2 to 1, crept into the second-place spot formerly held by the Drillers. Another 2 to 1 match gave Andersons a win over the Landowners. There were two trouncings (3-0): Willowcrest vs. the Grange and the Church vs. the Airport. The latter team stubbornly maintains its firm attachment to the cellar position.
Woodbridge Bowlers To Meet High Lane
The two high-ranking women's teams and the two high-ranking men's teams of the Woodbridge Club will compete against the similar topscoring teams from the High Lane Club on the evening of March 3. Four of the teams will be bowling at the Masonic Temple in Westville, while, at the same time, the other four will bowl at the alleys in the High Lane Club in Spring Glen. The results will be relayed by telephone, and the contests will be witnessed by many members of both clubs. There has been a great deal of interest in bowling among the Woodbridge members this year, with over 180 people participating in team play since the start of the season in early October. At the close of the competition, the teams will be entertained at the Club houses.
The high school group will bowl in the afternoon of March 3 at the Masonic Temple also. The two groups of younger bowlers will conclude their season on March 17 and 24.
Badminton Tournament Very Successful
The Midseason Handicap Tournament of the Woodbridge Badminton Club was completed last Tuesday with the playing of semi-final and final matches at the Woodbridge Town Hall. The doubles team of Charlie Beetz and Peter Jennette won the tournament by defeating the runners-up, Willa Perkins and Joanne Lunt, by a score of 17 to 14, in a very close match. This is Charlie's second win, since he was victorious in the 1950 tournament with Anne Smith as his partner. The matches have been marked by well-played spirited games with close scoring, and showed a decided improvement in team play under tournament conditions. The Club looks forward to a Ladder Tournament and the Annual Spring Tournament to be held late this season. In addition to the finalists, the following played in the tournament: Kathy Bishop, Donna Vidal, Bunny Fellows, Edith Dahlin, Pat Sheahan, Ann Stoddard, Jean Pooman, Mary Lou Gordon, Edith Baldwin, Richard Townsend, Marty Daniell, and Donald Ford.
