Curative Workshop Helps Amity Road Boy
Photo by courtesy of Mrs. DeLucia
Little Joseph DeLucia, Jr., will be four years old in June. He is at the Newington Home for Crippled Children, a victim of cerebral palsy. Joseph is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph DeLucia of 122 Amity Road and is called Jody. When he was about 15 months old, his parents relized that the coordination of some of his muscles was not developing properly. After a series of tests at the Yale Child Development Clinic, Jody underwent a course of physical therapy treatments at the New Haven Hospital, supplemented by caretully guided exercises at home.
When he was about two years old, Mrs. DeLucia started taking Jody to the New Haven Curative Workshop for a therapy treatments. Last fall, the DeLucias were advised that their son had made sufficient progress to be taken care of in the Newington Cerebral Palsy wing. Now JOdy, who is mentally alert and in excellent condition, is attending a nursery school group and receiving special speech training, as well as therapy treatments there. He is about to start walking with a new set of specially designed braces.
The family usually drive to Newington to bring Jody home for the weekend and are eagerly looking forward to this new wvidence of progress in his condition. They are anticipating the day when their whole family will be together again.
This description is designed to point out what courageous parents can do for their children who are victims of cerebral palsy. The opportunities for these treatments are provided by contributionto the Society for Crippled Children and Adulsts, of which the New Haven Curative Workshop is a member branch. The parents of many of these children have helped assemble and address the Fund appeal letters sent out by the Workshop, in gratitude for the help given their children.
Mr. and Mrs. DeLucia and their two daughters, Linda and Rosemary, are to see Jody on Easter Sunday. Have you remembered to Buy Easter Seals?
Friends of the Cerebral Palsy Association will give a benefit card party at San Remo in Morris Cove on the evening of April 25. Tickets may be obtained from Mrs. Joseph DeLucia or reservations made by calling 3-5335. Mrs. Eugene Caso of Morris Cove is in charge of the program.
