BETHANY NOTES
In the first round playoffs of Section 1, Class B, in the New Haven Area Church Basketball League, the Bethany team beat Bethesda Lutheran by a score of 28 to 24 last Saturday night, in a closely-fought, somewhat rough battle, featured by several "put-outs" on both sides. Bethany's scores were made by Johnson (12), Giblin (6), MacDonald and Winter (3 each), and Simpson and Jackson (2 each). As a result of this victory, the Bethany team will meet St. Luke's of New Haven next Saturday on the YMCA court. A large hometown following is expected to witness the contest.
At the Broadway Bowling Alleys last week, the Bethany league celebrated "two to one" night, all matches being won by that margin. The winners were: Beckers, Drillers, Garage, Willowcrest, and Landowners. The teams they beat were, in the same respective order: Grange, Andersons, Airport, Firemen, and Church.
On Sunday, March 18, the Young People's Group is joiningi Youth Groups from several Churches in the Naugatuck Valley area in a Youth Rally at Christ Episcopal Church in Waterbury. The organizations will meet at 5:00 P.M. to hear a talk by the Bishop-elect, the Reverend Robert M. Hatch.
Last Sunday, the New Haven Council of Churches sponsored a special Communion Service at Center Church in New Haven. About 800 men from the area attended. Bethany was represented by Dwight Downs, Kendrick Gooch, Russell Winter, Gilbert Whitlock, and Kneeland Downs. After the service a communion breakfast was served at the Parish House.
